Engineering Scholarships

I have a couple Q's about cockrell engineering scholarships.

1)When I got my honors acceptance today, it said I've been awarded a 1 year, 2500 dollar scholarship. Is this the end of scholarship offers from them, or is it possible that they'll offer me others when they send me a financial aid package?

2)How much are the scholarship amounts based on need? FAFSA probably won't indicate that I'm very needy, but I do have pretty good SATs, GPA, etc... Do they usually make much of an effort to compete with other schools (in regards to more qualified applicants who may get offers from other top tier schools) even if my demonstrated need is minimal?

3)What is usually the range on these Engineering Scholarships that they notify you about with honors acceptances? 2500 for one year has got to be the minimum, but I've heard people talk about 10k, 4 year ones. Are those pretty much for the Ivy-League-calibre applicants?

Thanks!
-Michael

The scholarship that I got specifically states “$5,000 per year for up to four years. The total value of this scholarship is as much as $20,000.” I’m guessing if your scholarship doesn’t say that, then it might just be a $2,500 one-time thing. I’m going to hypothesize that it’s very strongly based on need though, because my EFC was 60, and I have a friend who has about the same stats as me but a much higher EFC, and he only got the $2,500 one.

I doubt it has anything to do with need. My family could easily, easily pay for UT and I also received the 20k scholarship.

same as bob

michaelwiggins, I believe that $1000 is the minimum Engineering scholarship offer. Congratulations to all who received scholarships.

Engineering scholarships are based on standardized test scores.

You could still receive tuition grants if you have financial need.

They are not based on standardized test scores. They may be a factor but not the cut and dry deal. Someone on here who got EHP with a 2380 (a sick score) only got the one time 2500 dollar scholarship

Then I guess it might be class rank?

@DavidRicardo: By EFC of 60, you mean 60 thousand? Because that’s a really high EFC. Mine is 36k.

Oh, no. The two-digit number. Neither of my parents are college graduates and have pretty boring jobs. My adjusted gross income on the tax returns was actually around 14k.

ah I should’ve said they seemed to be based on test scores for last year

the people I know with 6k/year had 1500+ M+CR and the people with the 9k/year had 35+ ACT (weird huh)

When did you guys receive your scholarship information?
I have received three letters so far from UT, but they’re all generic acceptance letters/“this is what you should do now” notes. Nothing about scholarships, for which I’d assume I’d qualify.

Well we were talking about the scholarship thats mentioned in the Engineering Honors Acceptance letters. I really don’t know anything about them, and I didn’t expect to get it at that point. Basically it says “hey youre in, bee tee dubz, here’s X dollars”.

Apparently they range from 1k 1 year, to 20k over 4 years, from what I’ve gathered.

I think they can still dole out scholarships later on when you get your financial aid report, but this “Engineering Scholarship” as it was called in the letter, apparently comes first.

Ah, so these scholarships are reserved exclusively for EHP admits? I see.

My son got the small scholarship without applying to EHP.

My (non-EHP) S also received a small Engineering Scholarship his 1st year.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a scholaship this year. Cockrell has lots of opportunities for continuing students with GPAs of at least 3.0

Yeah like zlc said their are more opportunites after freshman year

Huh. I’ve received about five letters from UT since my acceptance last week, but not a single one was about scholarships. That’s slightly disheartening.

^I’ve gotten zero letters, hows that for disheartening.

“Look kid, we know you’re not getting in anywhere else, so quit stalling and put down a housing deposit.” lolz

^haha

That’s harsh
