Are there a lot of study abroad opportunities for engineering majors? Has anyone here participated in one?

Look into www.semesteratsea.com . You can do an engineering-oriented summer program that takes you all over the world. Most "normal" programs however are going to be in Western European countries/Austrailia/etc. Engineering is pretty difficult to study abroad in, but with careful planning or doing it over winter/summer break, it can be done :) Talk to your International Studies office and your advisor, they can help you. Engineering students often study abroad, it's just less opportunities than say a humanities major, in need of more planning ahead, and a bit more work.

are you dead set on studying your engineering courses while abroad? i managed a free semester in my schedule so i could study abroad and really just enjoy the culture, not doing problem sets, without getting behind.

My schedule is set, but I can take specified courses at a later or earlier date to free up the electives for my study abroad term.
