Engineering Transfer

I go to UMASS Amherst. I have a GPA of about 3.8 in Electrical Engineering. I was wondering if I should bother to apply as a transfer student to Harvard next March (when the applications are due). I would be transferring as a sophomore. I realize some of my credits wouldn't transfer, but hopefully some should. I just feel like I never did the college search process right in High School. I am really happy at UMASS but I am curious to see if I would be accepted. If I was accepted, I'd probably go, depending on how many courses I would have to repeat. I heard from someone who was a freshman with me this year was accepted to Harvard but none of his credits would transfer and he would restart as a Freshman. I plan on doing engineering projects in my sophomore year, maybe they would help? Also, I feel well connected with faculty and might be able to get good reccomendations

If anyone is a current Harvard undergrad studying engineering or is familiar with the undergard program, please tell me more. The cousework for the program is here

UMASS is rated the best public engineering university in New England, so to no surprise I have done some of these courses. I’ve done all but one of the math classes, the science classes, and a few of the engineering classes.
I don’t think the new program at Harvard is much different than the well established program at my school, and. the newness of the program at a great college interests me

Have you checked out the transfer applications website: <a href=“Transfer Applicants | Harvard”>https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/transferring-harvard-college</a> as well as the engineering website: <a href=“Academics | Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences”>http://www.seas.harvard.edu/academics/undergraduate</a></p>

yes i have looked into both. one of my concerns from that is that my high school transcripts would be part of a transfer application and i dont think they are as impressive as my college transcripts. up until senior year of high school, i never cared about grades (but still did good) for example, i got straights a’s in tenth grade, without trying hard or studying. not every year was as good. I took the hardest classes at my high school, yet my high school had really bad academics. no AP, and only one calculus class offered for seniors. I entered high school having completed algebra 2 and geometry, only to repeat in the first two years of high school. I feel that I have been deprived of good academics up until my time at UMASS and feel that if I could push myself the extra mile (harvard), I would succeed and learn more!

H has about a 1-2% admit rate. Nothing wrong with applying – as long as you go into it w/your eyes wide open.

In reply to T26E4, I agree with the idea of it doesn’t hurt to giving it a try. I am curious what people think of the transfer. Harvard isn’t ABET accredited. Does anyone think having been a Harvard undergrad would give me a hand up in applying to Harvard grad school? Or would having a really good GPA, good standardized test scores, etc be enough.

People hiring engineers will look at the reputation of your undergrad. Harvard engineering isn’t going to wow anyone. A 3.8 in your current pgm is certainly a great feat.

H undergrad isn’t a boost per se for H grad. Being excellent is requisite for H grad. Many excellent applicants come from H undergrad.

Enough? Many more applicants than seats. Make your own conclusions.

Thank you for all your advice!!
