I'm in love with MIT and I hope that I get accept as a junior. However, as I started working on my transfer application I found out that I'm missing a solid reason why I wanna transfer. I mean, MIT is definitely my dream school and I've always aimed for this school but I cannot just apply for the prestige. So I was hoping if any MIT student or anybody else who knows the school well can tell me about the academic program that makes MIT so unique. Again, I want something SPECIFICALLY related to the academic program. Please don't say things like "top students with great facilities and professors blahblablah..." I want DETAILS. For instance, u can mention the Cross Registration which allows MIT student to experience both Harvard and wellsley(opportunities like this is pretty much nonexistent at my school) However, I'm pretty shure that MIT won't recommend cross registration for transfers since the adjustment will take time. Thus, I'm looking for some other reasons that can link me with MIT. I'm looking for something that distinguishes MIT from the other schools and especially mine, UIUC. By the way, I'm a electrical engineering major.

Not to burst your bubble, MIT only takes 5 transfers.

I was at an infosession during the summer at MIT. Basically, what they said was that unless you were an INTEL finalist or past winner, you have no chance. Most transfer students are already from prestigious engineering programs and have come close to winning intel.

I hope you have a 1500+ and lots of math. They look for people to complete their science pre-reqs (2 physics, 2 bio, 1 chem.. or something like that) before you apply.. probablly even more.

not to repeat alangreenspan, but you might want to look into another top engineering program if you really want to transfer, because you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than being accepted as a transfer to MIT. put it in perspective- harvard, an extremely tough school to transfer to, takes fully 55 students a year, while MIT, a AG said, takes only 5.

as for reasons to transfer, we arent gonna be able to help you with that. go to the website and find out more info. things like location, knowledge of the faculty, opportunites to further yourself in the engineering field that are better than at any other school are all good reasons.

First, if you cannot articulate a reason for wanting to transfer, I would have doubts as to whether MIT would be the right place for you.

Second, even if you do meet the above prerequisite, as adumbrated by two posters, MIT only accepted 5 people last year. Start filling out lottery tickets, because you have a better chance of winning/earning money that way.

it barely has a college life and it's more of a "TEACHING INSTITUTE" than a fun, awesome, school-spirited university!

I'm only saying this so you can keep your boundaries open to other AWESOME schools out there.

i'm a transfer as well, but even if i had a 4.0 or whatever and all of MIT's reqs, and they accepted me, I wouldn't go in a second!

I'd rather go to any school that says "University of....."

! Trust I've heard from people that currently go to MIT that it literally "sucks' because it does not have a college life....and every day you see a bunch of people in suits [including students!]

trust me man...go to a real university and have the time of your life!

Unless you have some ground breaking discovery in the engineering sciences, I will recommend you to look at other schools than MIT. I applied to MIT, UC Berkeley, Caltech and Stanford for engineering. Had a 4.0 transfer GPA but got rejected from MIT and Caltech. Got into UC Berkeley and Stanford though as a transfer student for Chemical Engineering. IN OTHER WORDS, BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR CHANCES

In this post he said he has a 3.71 and are still applying for entrance for Fall 05.

He's just trying to discourage a 4.0 from applying to better his chances of getting in. Too bad for him the fact that he has to do something underhanded as that just shows poor of a student and lacking in character he is.

Heh, he's probably related to this kid.

Sure the chances are slim but it looks like mosharma134 is also applying to MIT and is actively trying to discourage (better) students from him from applying, which I think is wrong.

By the way mosharma134 you do realize that people from MIT's Admission Committee read (and post) on the CC forums don't you?

You know how easy it is to match up a name to the stats you posted in this thread?

I am sure MIT doesn't look kindly on applicants that use dishonorable tactics to try and get in. Keep that in mind when writing up your next post.
