Engineering- U Mich or UIUC?
opinions??

In Engineering, they are about the same. Unless money is a factor, I'd recommend you pick Michigan because in terms of overall environment and experience, Michigan is better than UIUC.

Yeah. And we mean much better. Champaign sucks. Unless UIUC is leagues better in your specific area of engineering, or unless you live in IL, go to Michigan.

yep - if out of state - go to Umich. If in-state, U of I is a great deal - but it cannot be underestimated the flat, boring out of the middle of nowhere place that is Champaign Urbana.

UIUC may be located in a flat area but their engineering is top notch -- much better than UM. Urbana-Champaign is 2 hours from Chicago, 3 hours from St. Louis and 2-3 hours from Indianapolis, etc.

what do you not like about UC, that the soil is bad, or that the sun doesn't shine there? Stupid post alert for ****earsfan17

huh?

Nothing about UIUC is much better than U-M. In fact, engineering is the only real discipline in which UIUC even competes with Michigan... and they're about equal in that regard.

Get a clue.

Thanks.

Haha, you're kidding right?
UIUC Computer Science is top 5 while Michigan barely makes it in the top 15. How is that exactly "equal"?

You have to compare apple to apple and not apple to orange. Mechanical Engineering at U of M is ranked third while I don't see UIUC in top 3. Industrial / Manufacturing at U of M is ranked second and again I don't see what is called UIUC in top 3. Aerospace Engineering program at U of M is placed third and UIUC is somewhere in the horizon maybe :). So please be realstic and don;t quote like that "UIUC may be located in a flat area but their engineering is top notch -- much better than UM." It is stupidity in that regard. One more thing, Computer Science at U of M is changing with the brand new state-of-the-art facility and maybe better than the one over at "UIUC" with better town and overall reputation of U of M - Ann Arbor. Make note to the above obmud01.

uiuc rank 4 vs umich rank 6. With your number rankings, i think uiuc wins..

But obmud said UIUC engineering "is MUCH better than UM". Let's look at the facts:

Aerospace - Mich(3)...UIUC(8)
Biomedical - Mich(8)...UIUC(NR)
Chemical - Mich(10)...UIUC(8)
Civil - Mich(8)...UIUC(1)
Computer - Mich(6)...UIUC(5)
ECE - Mich(5)...UIUC(4)
Engr Science - Mich(6)...UIUC(4)
Environmental - Mich(2)...UIUC(3)
Industrial - Mich(2)...UIUC(12)
Materials - Mich(3)...UIUC(2)
Mechanical - Mich(3)...UIUC(6)
Nuclear - Mich(4)...UIUC(8)

How's that make UIUC engineering "much" better? For all practical purposes, the two schools are peers in engineering.

I agree with goblue81 that both schools are peers in engineering. I don't know about the word "much better" because the UIUC fan doesn't make sense in here. But I know how to confirm the opposite that UM is "much better" than UIUC by looking at the following stand alone facts:

National Universities: Top school

U of M is ranked # 25 while UIUC is # 42 :) Go Blueeeee

Top Public National Universities

U of M is ranked # 3 while UIUC is # 11 :) Go Blueeeee

and not to mention U of M in any other colleges are ahead of what is called UIUC. For more info, click on the link http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/rankindex_brief.php
to find out where UIUC is placed.
