I have heard that Cal Poly Pomona has a great engineering program. My question is, how does it compare with the engineering programs over at a UC [UC Irvine for example]. Are they very similar or is one much better than the other? thanks

I recently visited Cal Poly Pomona, and the engineering dept. gave a presentation on their program at Pomona. It seems pretty solid, they told about how 1 in 14 engineers get cranked out of that school in Cali. They also have a lot of labs for your specific engineering discipline. I was having a hard time deciding whether to go to UCI or Pomona also ( http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=403363 ).

I visited UCI for a workshop/tour thing also, and I like the school (better campus than Pomona), but UCI is known for being research/theory-oriented rather than practical, whereas CPP is the other way around. In my opinion, Pomona would be better for engineering unless you plan on getting your doctorate or go into something research-oriented.

I plan on going to CPP for fall quarter 2008 myself, instead of UCI.

hmmmmm. I don't know what to say. I personally don't want to go to CPP because its not a UC...something that I had set my minimal standard to be. Then again, CPP would be much cheaper, and it would specialize more in what I plan to be[according to you]. Can anyone else offer any other words of advice? Thanks for the response btw. :D

what is your major btw?

Im not sure yet. Some sort of engineer. It could be chemical, electrical, aerospace, civil, or maybe even medical. Whatever I find pays the most I guess.

I have been in Cal Poly's Engineering program for about a year now and so far everything have been better than what I expected.

I have gotten to know my professors pretty well and I got a chance to work on lot of hands on projects which I think is very valuable experiences and good points to put on the resume.

The class size is pretty small as compare to some of the other school that I know of. Most professors here do not have TA so they do most of the teaching and other class related tasks themselves. Most of the time, many professors want help with some research and in my opinion, this opens up a great opportunity for both the student and professors to work together.

Oh geez, please don't compare Cal Poly's Engineering with UCI's. UCI's Engineering program is absolutely terrible.

Read the thread themediocre linked to, I posted my comments there.

I'm applying to Cal Poly Pomona for grad school, but blah this is the only thread here.
