Does anyone have any idea of the difference in work load between ENGL 15 and ENGL 30 (honors)? Do students who take ENGL 30 have a better chance of getting better instructors?

in my opinion, yes, 30 has a chance of better instructors. if you're a good (or even deccent) english student, do 30, hands down. i've never heard anything but complaints from 15 students. that might be just because they weren't fond of english in general, but from what i can tell, 15 isn't as stimulating as 30. 15 is more "write 6 papers. go." in 30 there's generally a lot of reading involved (in 15 there's typically not) and more class discussion.

then again, that's how all of the honors classes i've taken at psu are (a lot more reading and discussion rather than raw demonstration of what one learns).

lastly, i'd suggest looking up your potential professors on ratemyprofessors.com. you have to take it with a grain of salt, but the reviews are generally helpful for finding good instructors.

Thanks for the info. S enjoys reading and discussion much more than simply churning out papers. Ratemyprofessor.com has been bookmarked on our computer for a while and will be a great help.

I'd say if she likes English class, English 30 is for her. I, on the other hand, am more into the maths & sciences, so I'm taking 15.

Actually, S is an engineering major but placed highly on SATs and FTCAP, allowing him to choose either English 15 or 30. He is currently enrolled in 30 but is trying to decide whether to stay in it or change to English 15.

well.. i had a choice between english 30 and 15, but picked 15. Reason was simple, though English 30 may be more "Stimulating" and u may get more out of it, ur still graded on the same scale. Meaning it is harder, greater potential to hurt ur GPA, and thus require more of ur time. As a freshman idk how hard it would be for me to manage my course work, so i would rather be on the safe side and go with a slightly easier class. To add to this, when i was making my course list for next year, the english 30s were all really late and mostly maxed out. (also it isnt a smaller class) But i was able to easly fit in eng15 and balance my schedule. I am not trying to push u over the fence, but just givin my 2 sense. Anyways i am sure i could be compltely wrong and made a dumb dissicusion but choosing eng15

There is a separate course in the schedule ENGL015A. Does anyone know the difference between 15 and 15A?

English 30 isn't 'harder' than english 15.Its just 'different kind of work.'
You're given reading assignments and papers that relate to the reading assignments. We also had pop quizzes on the assigned readings and a lot of class dicussion. You can re write ALL your papers as much as you want and re submit them. And we also had weekly online journals. The teacher really challenged us. The very first paper we wrote-she didn't grade 3/4 of them. You'll learn how to structure your paper, focus on a specific topic, transition smoothly from one paragraph to the next, etc. Its definitely more time consuming than english 15 but seriously- i wouldnt trade the stuff i learned about 'writing' in that class for anything. I got a B+ in english 30(and thats because i was slacking). Truast me- you wont necessarily get a better grade taking english 15 than you would if you take english 30. So level of 'difficulty' of the respective courses should definitely not be a factor when deciding which one you want to pick.Think about class size- and which class you learn the most from. And you would also have to take theatre 105H(honors intro to theatre) if you take english 30. You dont have to get up and act-ITS NOT AN ACTING CLASS! Its more literature.Greek theatre- you'll read greek plays. And you'll also go-as a class- to see plays and do papers on them.We also had Workshops.
