english at jhu

i am applying to jhu RD, and i was wondering if anyone knows how the english/creative writing dept is.
any info is much appreciated.

The creative writing major is pretty big at hopkins. Writing Seminars major is known to be one of the best in the nation (surely top 5).

awesome thank you

How about literature? I am really looking forward to taking a class about Jane Austen to Virginia Woolf (or something to that extent).

There's British Literature by century: this summer I took 19th, and we covered Austen, C. Bronte, Eliot, Dickens, and Wilde. It was a great class; a lot of reading and writing in 5 weeks, but you'll have that during the summer.

Ohh that sounds so exciting! English is going to be one of my majors, as of right now. I can't wait to take the British Literature courses. At the risk of sounding like a huge dork, I love BritLit, especially Jane Austen. I can't wait to take the Henry James course either!

The English Department is nationally ranked among the Top 10 overall. Johns Hopkins is one of the leading universities for 19th & 20th Century American Literature, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory.

The JHU Writing Seminars Department is considered the best for creative writing, along with Iowa. Other universities like Princeton and Columbia have great creative writing courses within their English Departments. However, at Hopkins the Writing Dept. is separate and undergads can major in creative writing- focusing on poetry, fiction, screenwriting, etc.

The acceptance rate for JHU's Ph.D. program in English is 2%. It's more difficult to make JHU's Ph.D. program in English than to make JHU medical school! The same professors that teach PH.D. students, teach undergraduates and classes are often small.
