I noticed that UMD’s undergrad English program is ranked #30, but I have never heard anyone talk about it. Does anyone have any experience as an English major, possibly as somebody with a creative writing emphasis in fiction or film? Or does anyone know anything about the program in general?
I am also interested in NYU’s English program, but impossibly intimidated by the HUGE city.
“I noticed that UMD’s undergrad English program is ranked #30”
Do you have a source?
If you got the English ranking from the following three websites, then unfortunately, that’s not the ranking for “undergrad” English program, but for master’s/doctorate program:
https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/university-of-maryland-college-park-163286
https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/english-rankings/page+2
https://www.umdrightnow.umd.edu/university-maryland-rankings (“English ranked 32nd”)
But if your source isn’t from those two, please let me know.
But if your source was from one of the three, then the reason people don’t talk about it is that people with master’s and doctorate degree tend not to use College Confidential (also, people with those degrees asking questions are very minuscule in here).
It will be very tough to find rankings for undergrad programs because professors spend more time with graduate students (that is to say, people who already have mastered basics of the field the professor is teaching) than with undergraduate students, so most of the rankings are based on its graduate program.
