I have no idea what I want to do after college, so I’ve been having trouble trying to decide on a major. I know that I want to do something along the lines of writing…kind of…but I don’t know what. Something like advertising, editing, teaching, publishing. What is a good major for that? Does a double major in English and Communications make sense? Are there even any positive outcomes of going that route?
Of course there are - people with English and communications degrees get jobs all the time, and many well-known media correspondents and news anchors majored in one or both of them. You don’t have to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life right now - but if you know of a constellation of careers that you might be interested in (and you just named them - advertising, editing, teaching, publishing) then you can pick a major that goes along well with them. English and communications are both good majors for that constellation of careers and other ones related to it that you might fall into.
I’m a copywriter and I think that’s a good combination. Try to take classes that might show you what you’re best at, what you like the most. Take technical writing, journalism, copywriting, magazine writing, a gn marketing class, etc.
