English/Creative Writing

D2 is a rising HS Junior who's starting her college search and recently begun visiting schools. She's planning to major in English Lit/Creative Writing. Some of the college guides that she's looked at have indicated that IU-Bloomington has a strong English department and that the related courses are quite challenging. I've been following this sub-forum for a while and, while I realize that the majority of threads seem to focus on the Business school, I was wondering if anybody is familiar with the English major at IU (or knows someone who's an English major: How strong is the program? How challenging are the classes? We're OOS and trying to find another state university with a strong Creative Writing/English course of study. Thank you.

I know that Iowa has a fantastic creative writing program, if you're looking for a state school with a strong creative writing program. It's the best in the country. Here is a link I found to rankings.

University Creative Writing Programs

IU ranks 18th in the nation in English in the NRC rankings, and 17th on the Creative Writing rankings. Both departments are very solid.

Thanks, A2Wolves6, for your response and the link. We are familiar with U. Iowa, as my daughter participated in a summer program there. Their Creative Writing program is stellar, to be sure, although our understanding is that the strength is mainly in the graduate program/ Iowa Writers' Workshop.

My daughter will be hopefully completing her outside field in English so we'll keep you posted.

^Thanks, I would appreciate that. We've noticed IU because, first, we read in a couple of college guides (Fiske and another one) about how IU's English courses are supposed to be challenging and that it's difficult for students to get A's in them. Also, I recall seeing a thread posted on CC a while back about how U. Wisconsin-Madison(which traditionally had a strong English Department) was starting to lose some of their Humanities professors to schools such as IU-Bloomington and U. Pittsburgh(where she's also looking at).

I am a english major at IUPUI and love it check it out!! It is an IU degree, but at a campus in downtown indy with smaller classes, less parties, and friendlier professors plus you can take Purdue classes too. You will get more personal attention here then you will in bloomington. I am a freshmen and all my professors know my name!! If your heart is set on bloomington go ahead ,but if you want a smaller classes, urban setting, and more friendly professors then look at IUPUI!! Good Luck!!
