English Feb 7 ACT

“Dense” was right.

Ok good!

I also had trouble with the paasite/tree one. I think I put “the parasite prompted the tree” because it said something along the lines of “After digging to the core, ___________ to something something something.” That made me think that you had to put in that the the parasite did the digging because leaving it out would imply that the tree dug to its own core.

i think i also put dense although i may have left it as stuffed…hope not though…

@smarty99: yeah i wasn’t sure about that. it was either ‘parasite prompts the tree’ or ‘the tree was prompted by the parasite’

@heretosucceed92: if the question was the way you worded it i guess it would be their but i remember putting his or her for some question although i’m not sure if it was that one…was there another question that had his or her as an answer choice?

^ im getting everything the same as you rocket surgery.

i put down the “parasite prompts the tree”

That’s a good sign for you!

@awkturtle: I am not 100% sure that I 1) worded the question in the same way that it appeared on the test or 2) that there was another question with the answer choice his or her. I am 100% sure, however, that I am utterly unreliable in recalling anything that happened over two hours ago. So I probably wrote the sentence down in the wrong structure. Does anyone else remember the sentence exactly as it appeared?

You know what, I can almost remember the sentence, and I’m pretty sure the next word was “careers”, in which case “his or her” wouldn’t even be plausible. But even if I’m not remembering the sentence correctly, I know that “their” was right.

^ Yeah it was their careers.

Anybody know about the question that was with the chandelier in the box house thing?

It was either a colon or parentheses?

I dont think that a semicolon was an option

i’m pretty sure it was a colon.

The parenthesis was wrong. Think about it: if you replaced the selection with that answer, you’d end up with an opening parenthesis and no closing parenthesis.

i put the colon…just wondering. i knew the parentheses were wrong but i thought the other choices were dumb

Colon. Even without the grammatical knowledge, that would have been a LONG phrase to put inside parentheses, especially for the ACT.

“Does anyone remember the very first question on the test? It was something like, “their careers in … ______way” Sorry, I can’t remember which word was in the blank
but I do remember getting down to to answers: “their” or “his or her”. I think I put their in order to keep it consistent with the rest of the sentence but I can never remember that rule for using their vs. his or her.”

I thought it was his or her because the subject was singular.

The subject wasn’t singular.

wat bout the one about granny’s arms…powerful arms, study arms, firm embrace, or strenous arms?

“Strenuous arms” was unacceptable.

Ohh it wasn’t singular? I guess I was reading to quickly then.

If I recall correctly, the subject of the sentence was a group of people who were then referred to as “they”, so it should have been “their careers”.
