I was admitted as an English major at USC, and while I know I may very well change my mind, I was wondering how their English program is, both from the point of view of rankings and of former/current students.

I am an English major. It is not a ranked program at USC. I have found my experience pretty satisfying. I have had some really knowledgable professors, and one of them this semester is probably my favorite professor at USC so far.

There are two reasons that I am not ecstatic about the English major. One of the reasons is not USC's fault at all, and that is just that I am not entirely all that passionate about the major. I hadn't found a major that called to me, so I decided on an English major since I like to read. There is a lot of reading, that while they are classics, I do not always enjoy, but these are books that every college will be reading.

The only pitfall I think of USC's English major is that not as much attention is paid to it. Majors like Business and Film are pampered, and majors that they are trying to improve like Engineering are treated great. English is not that high on USC's list. Then again, there's not that much that a school can do to boost their English dept. Majors like Engineering and Film can get high-tech gadgets and expensive gizmos. There's not much like that needed in the way of English.

USC actually has begun to pay more attention to the English major though, bringing in recognized professors from around the country and programming job events and such for us.

One of the benefits of being an English major here, is that I am surrounded by brilliant kids. While there are a lot of other majors that are easier or have students that are not as studious, the English major has students that read a lot, and analyze well. It's pretty nice (and at the same time intimidating). It also is motivating.
