English major transfer from URI

I'm an English major at the University of Rhode Island, and I desperately want to transfer. I will be entering my second year in the Fall, and as I realize it's too late to transfer for the Fall semester, I intend on starting elsewhere in the Spring.

I'm incredibly unhappy with the English program at URI, as well as the Writing & Rhetoric program, which I am minoring in. I did not find any of the English or Writing & Rhetoric classes particularly stimulating or challenging. The only challenging element was the fact that I was unhappy.

I love the campus and I've had an amazing social experience, but I realize now that these are not things worth spending my time, money and effort on if I'm not going to benefit from these elements after graduation.

I'm from Rhode Island, which is why I ended up here. I'm not wealthy by any means, which is another reason why I chose URI. What I mean to say is that I would like to go to a school that isn't too far away and is also reasonably affordable.

Essentially, this is my criteria:
1. An English or Writing program which I will benefit from intellectually. I'm not setting my sights on anything Ivy League, however, so I don't want a workload that I can't handle at all. I want something I can learn from, not something that's going to waste my time by either being too easy or too difficult.
2. Not too far from RI -- this could mean a lot of things, of course. Essentially, I want to stay on the east coast.
3. Affordable. To give you an idea of what I mean by "affordable," URI is somewhere around $14,126.00 for an in-state student according to the website. However, I believe my tuition bill was much more than this, so I'll actually guess I paid around $25K+ for a year of school which I was academically unhappy with. I realize I'll probably have to pay a lot more than that anywhere else, but I also don't want to be in massive debt. So, if I could receive decent financial aid, I'll be happy with something in the range of less than $50K a year.
4. Gay-friendly, preferably with a large population of LGBT students. I'm a lesbian.
5. Also, I will most likely want to live on campus, so I'd like to have decent options with that. I know that this should be factored in since some schools don't promise housing to second year students due to location and everything else.

Also, like I said, I liked the campus of URI. So, campus life is genuinely important to me, in the form of location, organizations, social atmosphere, etc. The size of the population and campus is somewhat important to me as well. I would prefer not to be somewhere too, too small as I'd like to have options.

My credentials:
GPA: 3.7
SAT: 1660

Just a side note, I'm minoring in GWS as well .. it would be nice if there was a GWS or Advertising program at the school I end up at, but this is not a necessity. I'd like to have a lot of options though so that I don't end up screwed if I change my mind on my field of study!

bump? still need some suggestions on this!

Hi there! Have you looked into Smith College? It’s an all-women, highly inclusive school with a strong English program, and I would imagine a good GWS program as well. They are also very generous with financial aid, matching 100% of demonstrated need even for transfers. It’s my absolute dream school, and I’m looking to transfer for next spring as well! :)

I’ve been looking into Smith a bit, actually! I’d really like to speak to someone who majors in English there. I feel like it’d help to give me some substantial answers so I know what I’m getting into.

Good for you on the transferring! Honestly, college is worth way too much time, effort and money to waste on something you’re unhappy with.

Good luck to you in your transfer process as well! I agree, you only do your undergraduate career once, you’d best do it somewhere you love. If you’re interested in speaking with an English major student at Smith, I’d suggest you contact the admissions office or students office and inquire about getting in touch with an English major. I’m sure they’d be willing to help!
