Go to law school/grad school. Go into publishing. Go into journalism. Go into technical writing. Become a writer. Get a gov't job. Those are just a few off the top of my head. It all depends on how much you apply yourself.

Search the internet for "what can you do with a major in English"

*What do you do with a B.A. in English,
What is my life going to be?
Four years of college and plenty of knowledge,
Have earned me this useless degree.

I can't pay the bills yet,
'Cause I have no skills yet,
The world is a big scary place.

But somehow I can't shake,
The feeling I might make,
A difference,
To the human race.*

how do you get into publishing?

Publishing is extremely competitive since it's one of the more interesting and glamorous careers out there. It's also centered in New York (though there are a few houses in Boston, Chicago, SF, and LA), so if you're interested you should prepare to move there. Most people start out as editorial assistants, doing a mix of administrative and editorial work, and then slowly work their way up. Being an editorial assistant is a crappy job--read or see The Devil Wears Prada to find out about it--but it's pretty much the only way in, unless you want to start out as a designer or proofreader/copy editor.

You should check out the following websites, which are the bibles of the publishing industry and where job openings are posted:

www.mediabistro.com

Do not try to go into publishing. It is very difficult to get a job in, doesn't pay well at the lower level, and has limited job security. Basically the publishing industry is slowly dying because people are not reading.
