English or Philosophy majors?

I was admitted to the Fordham class of 2015 and think I'll probably be attending next year. I'm an English major, and possible double major in Philosophy. Unfortunately, looking at all the kids on the FB accepted students group, it seems like almost EVERYONE is majoring in either Business/Finance or Communications (what even is that?).

I'm really worried that if I go to Fordham, there will be very few English or Philosophy majors. Does anyone know anything about this or share this worry?

Fordham is one of my top choices. If I attend, it will be as a History and Philosophy major.

If they have a department for something, you can bet a significant number of people are majoring in it.

I would not worry about that at all. My S has a friend who is an English major, and two others who are Philosophy minors. I think both English and Philosophy are pretty popular majors. One good thing about Fordham is that between taking core classes and living in the dorms (if you are a resident student) you will meet and become friends with people in many different majors. Congratulations on your acceptance and good luck.

In each class, there’s about 850 students in the liberal arts school at Rose Hill, 500 in the Gabelli School of Business, and 450 in the liberal arts school at Lincoln Center. Communications is one of the most popular majors in the liberal arts school at Rose Hill, but English and philosophy are also popular. Both of these departments are very strong.

I’m an English major for the class of 2015!

Apparently, Fordham has a strong Philosophy department. I’ve never heard anything of it and I hate the director of the department. He’s an idiot.

(And his class was the worst class I’ve ever taken.)

I’ve had three philosophy classes and I’ve loved each one. My roommate is in the business school and is minoring in philosophy, but is considering switching into the liberal arts school so he can major in philosophy. He raves about the professors he’s had so far and wants to take more courses with them. There’s a number of national philosophical journals and societies based at Fordham.

Of course, individuals may have varying experiences, even with reputable programs. And my experience with philosophy is limited to Rose Hill.

^Monoclide, did you have Balestra? Yes, he comes off as a bumbling idiot, but a lovable bumbling idiot.

tommytomato, you will have no problem being an English or Philosophy major here. They’re both very strong departments with great professors who are incredibly active in their fields. If you’re concerned that the student body is going to consist of GSB students and communications majors… well… just don’t hang out exclusively with athletes.
