English teacher in a foreign country

I have been thinking about college a lot lately and I decided I want to teach English in a foreign country, probably Japan or South Korea, but I have no idea what major I should do for college. Any help?

All you need is a pulse.

That really is helpful

In the past nearly any native speaker with a pulse could get a decent job in the countries you are looking at, but that simply isn’t so any more. The best choice would be a degree in TESOL. Look for a program that can lead to full teacher certification in at least one state. You will learn the skills that you need for the job, and you will also have more options if/when you return to the US.

The second best choice would be a degree in anything, followed by a term of service with JET http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/JET/</a> (for work in Japan), and/or eventually completing a CELTA <a href=“CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) | Cambridge English”>http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-qualifications/celta/</a> course. However if you are thinking about staying in either of those countries for the long term, and/or in that career for the long term, you will want to eventually complete your M Ed TESOL or a MS in Applied Linguistics. There are a number of colleges and universities offer this type of master’s program online.
