English

Is it true that the prereqs for med school include English? My S's highly-regarded LAC doesn't require him to take English. What level of English and how much must he take to fulfill this requirement? He is majoring in a foreign language and doesn't have much 'extra' time, given the number of science courses he's taking for med school. Also we have read that it is sometimes frowned upon to take physics at a second school. S was planning to take physics at a local univ. during the summer while he's home. Is this not advisable? Lastly, I understand that Texas med schools require 2 years of bio whereas other states/med schools only require only 1. What's up with that??

Your understanding is correct on all points. English is required (any writing-intensive course will do); summer courses in general are frowned upon, especially at a different school; Texas medical schools require two years of biology.

Any idea as to whether a writing course in his foreign language major would suffice for the English/writing requirement?

Definitely not if his writing won't be in English. Probably not even if so; AMCAS pays most attention to department title in determining course subject matter and medical schools are likely to follow their lead.

Take the English courses instead of physics at the local university.

How many credits is this foreign language major? Most majors at my school are only 50-60 credits. You need 120 to graduate, leaving plenty of credits to fulfill med school requirements.

I'd in fact advise not taking summer classes at all, and certainly nothing outside of your home school. If that means overloading at home, that's what it means. Summers are where you have a rare opportunity to throw yourself into another activity full-time. You have 75% of the year to prove you're a good student. You only get 25% to prove that you have the experiences you need to be a full, complete applicant. Use it.

Plus, summer classes can be pretty expensive. With MCATs, applications, and traveling for interviews, more money out of your pocket is the last thing you need.

Isn't AP English enough?

Not for many (most?) med schools.
