I was thinking about enlisting before college, to mature and decide whether I want the military as a career. Then, I'd apply to a regular college or the naval academy. How will enlisting affect the college admissions process?
to the naval academy?
to places like Pitt and Johns Hopkins?

Hey…I’m currently enlisted in the navy and have been for 2 years. I applied to the USNA Class of 2015. I would suggest that if you have the opportunity to go straight to college, then go. It is harder to enlist and apply to the naval academy because the process is very competitive. If you enlist and you don’t hit the ground running, it is harder to get recommended by your superiors. I have been very fortunate. I went from an E-1 to E-5, 1 year after I enlisted, this is almost unheard of. Most people when they enlist are E-3 and below for their first 3 years in. Also after enlisting you may see the navy in an entirely different light. Officer is the way to go!

So if you can apply directly to the naval academy, then do it. If you are accepted to a civilian college, then go. With a bachelors degree you can join the navy as an officer.
