so are you saying that if you want to use your laptop, you have to be in the lounge? You can't get an internet connection in your room???

^^ just not WiFi in the rooms in SOME dorms

ackk sorry guys. my connection was acting up =

anyways supposedly thats the asg president's or vp's goal, to get campuswide wireless. that and points for evanston food =D.

but in terms of wireless, if you can figure out how to set up an AP then by all means do it and dont make it obvious who it is. Hide the ssid or something. I had a router last year and i couldn't figure out how to get it to work from the plugs in the rooms, but thats a project for me next year when i go back

All of the dorms are wired for Ethernet, though, right? Just not wireless? So you can get internet in the rooms; you just may not be able to lie on your bed and do so, unless you bring a really long Ethernet cord ...

I have a 200 ft cable. I think that should cover me...

200 ft is perfect for trailing out your window to go study outside on the beach where the happens to be no wireless internet.

Sweet then :P.

overall what is the best cell phone service to use? verizon??

Yes, Verizon

leszolie, if you're planning to terminate your contract early to get a different provider, it's not worth it-especially in north campus indoors, signal is always somewhat spotty, and you can just run outside for a quick call or hang by the windows. Inside tech, you're most likely out of luck.

My D is at a summer program there and having a hard time on north campus in her dorm using her cell ... AT&T / Cingular. Is this all providers, per the comment above? Do the older dorms with the thicker walls have something to do with this?

nope, i was in slivka and my cingular was fairly spotty. verizon was better, worked most of the time although did have random dropped calls. some people say that with sprint you may be able to get calls in the basement (though you do have to point the antenna at the ceiling, etc)

I am a parent of a sophomore. As we live out of state, I was thrilled about the pack and hold service provided by Bed, Bath & Beyond. (You choose what you want at your local store, and then pick up the items at the Wilmette store.) The problem is that when we arrived at the Wilmette BB&B, they did not have a record of having received our order! Everything had been picked over at the store, and many of the items we requested were no longer available. The manager was very nice, and ended up giving us a 20% discount on the everything we did buy. We were able to find most of what we needed at the nearby Linens & Things and Target. So, I advise you to contact the BB&B a couple of weeks before you go, to make sure everything has been taken care of. Also, start saving your discount coupons for BB&B and Linens & Things. You can use up to 5 per visit, and they accept each other's coupons, too. We bought a microwave at Linens & Things, but did not bother to plug it in before we left. Lo and behold, it was defective, and our daughter had no way to exchange it. Make sure everything works before you go back home! I have heard many complaints about the university linens. Buy your own instead. The Pure Beech sheets from BB&B are great--very soft, and they wash nicely, too!

RE: cell phones. DD is rising junior and uses Sprint inside Tech all the time since there is a tower there. She has perfect reception all over town.

I lived in a northern dorm this past year and started off with cingular but switched to verizon because I didn't get service basically anywhere.

Whats a good sized TV to bring?

Depends on where you're living and where you want to put the tv. If you want to put it in your room, you gotta make sure your room's going to have somewhere to put a tv (ie table, desk, etc). If you have a suitelounge and want to put it there, theres the security question of if you want to leave a big tv in a public-ish area. plus don't forget about move in/out and convenience for that stuff.

DD used her computer for TV in Bobb. We brought the TV home.
You may want a cushion for your desk chair.

oh man, bring/buy your own desk chair!! the chairs they give you (in bobb at least) are awful. i bought a nice rolly, cushy one off of the floor from officemax for like $20. such a good decision--i just shoved the one they gave me in the back of my closet. definitely made studying in my room much better.

@ dcb07, just another addition

If you plan to use your TV to actually watch TV, you're out of luck. NU doesnt provide TV jacks in students rooms, but there is something called NUTV which is basically some student selected channels that you watch online. Just a heads up
