Can ya’ll help a confused Texan girl out?
Long story short, My entire family is moving to California (about an hour or so from Los angeles) in January. I already know I can’t get into UCLA as a freshman, So my question is will doing to community college route be a good plan for me?
I plan on working full-time my first year in California then enrolling myself in a nearby community college where I can hopefully transfer within 2 years. So i’d be living in California for 3 years before even applying to UCLA.
I saw some discussions here that alot of kids who move here are still considered out of state even after doing their first two years in a California CC, will it be the same for me since I moved with everyone in my family? Will I be considered out of state still and pay out of state tuition.
Is there anymore I can do and prepare for that will give me a shot at UCLA?
I’d appreciate any helpful advice! thank you!
Read the link above.
Your situation will be different because your family is moving with you to California and will be paying taxes.
If you haven’t already started at a university or community college, wait and apply this fall to UCLA as an incoming freshman. You may have to pay one year of OOS tuition but, you will have evidence that your family moved to California for reasons other than educational.
I don’t know exactly where in LA you’ll be living, but Santa Monica Community College has the best track record of UCLA transfers (at least from what I’ve heard).
Actually, Santa Monica CC is running about ~35% admittance over the last few years, but there are some CCCs >35%. Many are in the 30%+ range which isn’t that different from 35%. https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof.htm

@Happy2Help thanks for all the links~ very helpful. So I’ll probably get in state tuition since my whole family will be moving (paying taxes). I guess me waiting 3 years should be enough to convince UCLA that I am a california resident
@JenJenJenJen I’ll be living in Morena valley, I’d probably go to the community college their so save on expenses. Am I more likely to be picked from a more well known community college? It doesn’t really matter here in Texas so I’m hoping it would be the same in California. If yes, I’ll definitely take that into consideration.
@auntbea I have not started college yet but I definitely know I wont get admitted as a freshman with my highschool stats so I won’t bother. I’m an immigrant you see with no AP’s (came to this country during my senior year). my gpa is a 3.5 which drops me out of the race from the get go. So you can tell my only chance of getting into UCLA is transferring.
thank you for help everyone , i really do appreciate it.
