Enviable Police Blotter

<p>Many colleges would kill to have a police blotter like this:</p>

<p>the blotter actually used to be a lot longer...not because anything more dangerous happened (my personal favorite entry was along the lines of "officer alterted to injured squirrel in road. officer responded with medic kit, but was too late. Northampton sanitation department contacted), but because now the sophian reporter has to go there and copy stuff by hand, rather than pub. safety making a copy of it. </p>

<p>Yes, Smith is a wonderfully safe place to be.</p>

<p>Then there was the one about the injured pumpkin on the porch....</p>

<p>I get the e-version of THE SOPHIAN and I always read the police blotter. While I would never advise anyone to choose a college on the basis of personal security, it's oddly reassuring.</p>

<p>For those who don't get The Sophian, the latest:</p>

<p>11/21, 2:30 a.m., Public Safety Office
Numerous building alarms reporting to the Public Safety office. Unable to reset the system.</p>

<p>11/22, 4:30 p.m., Hopkins Parking Lot
Report of loud screaming from Hopkins parking lot. Upon arrival, male and female were located. It was determined that male has disability that causes him to scream loudly.</p>

<p>11/22, 5 p.m., Haven House
Report of white man dressed all in black going through dumpster at Haven House. Described as 30 years of age. Disappeared before officers arrived.</p>

<p>11/22, 9:45 p.m., Campus Center Caf</p>

<p>12/4/04, Gardiner, 5:09 a.m.
Officer reports seeing suspicious male enter Gardiner house on his own. Upon being questioned, he said he had lost his host, but he could not remember her name.</p>

<p>12/5/04, Emerson, 12:33 a.m.
Report of person throwing glass bottles off the tar beach (roof)</p>

<p>1/30/05, 5:06 a.m., Amherst College
Student called to request a ride. She had been left at the college by her friends. Was advised to take a taxi.</p>

<p>Police blotter 11/05/04:</p>

<p>November 5, 1:51 a.m., West Street
Student flagged down officer to let him know she had lent a vehicle to a friend. Said friend had not returned it. Advised to file a report with Northampton Police Department.</p>

<p>November 7, 8:42 p.m., Northrop House
Fire. Officers observed popcorn inside of the microwave. Northampton Fire Department decided the microwave was no longer safe to use. Microwave was disposed of in trash. HR promised to advise residents on how to make popcorn.</p>

<p>11/9/04, 4:43 p.m., Alumnae House
Employee reports loss of antique doll. Described as having brown hair and wearing a white nightgown. Doll had been missing since Oct.17. Doll was later recovered in said employee's house. Had been misplaced.</p>

<p>11/9/04, 7:58 p.m., Paradise Road</p>

<p>Student reports that as she walked to the infirmary, she was bitten on the back by a stray dog. Due to her clothing, she was unharmed. Home of dog is unknown but assumed to be nearby.</p>

<p>2/9/05, 10:58 a.m., Neilson Library
Student reports seeing strange man who is half-dressed and bare-foot lying on a couch in the main lobby of the library. Subject was asked to leave.</p>

<p>2/25/05, 5:08 p.m., Green Street</p>

<p>Student reports child screaming in front of Burdick's Chocolates. Child was calling for mother and there were two men standing near her. Officer reunites child with mother and two male cousins. Mother had been in East Heaven Hot Tubs.</p>

<p>3/3/05, 3:39 p.m., Sessions House
Student reports receiving multiple calls from company claiming to be with the federal government. Company claimed to have grant money for her and wanted her bank account information.</p>

<p>Killing is probably not the best solution to having a cleaner police blotter.</p>

POLICE LOG</p>

<p>March 11:</p>

<p>6:10 a.m.—A Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) officer was dispatched to Quincy House to investigate a report about packaging peanuts having been spread all over the lobby and elevator.</p>

<p>10:58 p.m.—An officer received a letter in the mail written out in newspaper clippings but no threats were made.</p>

<p>March 13:</p>

<p>5:30 p.m.—A person walked into HUPD to report a number of past, “simple” assaults that had occurred at Quincy House. A report was filed and the investigation is ongoing.</p>

<p>March 14:</p>

<p>1:24 p.m.—HUPD officers responded to Pound Hall because of a report about a “disturbed” person yelling and stomping their feet in the area. After searching for outstanding wants and warrants, which proved negative, the officers wrote up a no-trespass warning for the person.</p>

<p>March 17:</p>

<p>4:06 p.m.—An HUPD officer responded to 1316 Mass. Ave. because of a report about people in a store waving, what appeared to be, guns around. CPD was notified and upon their arrival, it was determined the alleged weapons were, in fact, lighters shaped as guns.</p>

Caller reported looking outer her third floor window onto Paradise Road and seeing three males running away from Wilder House entry.</p>

<p>4/1/05, Albright House, 9:33 a.m.
Bird found stuck by the head in the attic. Bird was freed. Animal control was called.</p>

<p>4/2/05, Hopkins House, 11:56 p.m.
Caller states that individual has fallen near a side window and broken the glass. No injuries, but $3000 worth of damage.</p>

<p>3/28/05, Cutter House, 9:07 p.m.
Caller states that she saw a flash and heard a loud bang. She believed it to be a gun shot coming from the vicinity of Davis. Caller said she may have been imagining things. Officer dispatched.</p>
