environmental vs. aerospace?

environmental is close to blooming, i just dont see much oppurtunity in the private market, only with the government. share to persuade?

aerospace i believe is not going away, with private possibilities probably increasing especially in astro.

live in michigan, i know uofm is a great school. i just want to get out. it is logical to choose uofm, i know. besides that, i would like input. and yes, i listen to my parents telling me uofm.

i am keeping money in mind, nothing over 50 grand, at max. of course, cheaper the better. no private, and it IS out of state.

right now, i have university of colorado, boulder. possibly caltech, with money being an issue. any suggestion works when it comes to picking between the two majors, or any suggestion of college, or both. thanks for your time.

purdue, university of illinois at urbana-champaign

both are just as good as umich

Having worked in both Aerospace and Environmental engineering, here is my perspective.

Aerospace is extremely interesting, intense, and fast paced. The salaries are high, but the jobs are contract dependent, so if your company bids on a government project and loses, expect layoffs.

Environmental is much steadier work, much less contract dependent. But it can be very tedious and repetitive. There are some new technologies that you can get involved in, but the starting salaries won't be as high as in Aerospace.

about how much would you say the average is for both?

Environmental engineers can expect to start at 10 - 15 k less per year than aerospace. Unless they work at an aerospace corp. like I do, where both aerospace and environmental engineers are on the same payscale.

Specialty Lowest 10% Lowest 25% Median Highest 25% Highest 10%

Aerospace engineers
59,610 71,360 87,610 106,450 124,550

Environmental engineers
43,180 54,150 69,940 88,480 106,230

caltech, university of colorado-boulder, uofmichigan, and stanford.

how is colorados program? i would love to go there, it is just that it is not at the top of any discussion right now. would i be sacrificing if i went there for the location rather than some of the others in my list? i really want to go, i just not have got positive feedback about my choice. it is close to some private air companies, and a NASA base, i believe. what's wrong with going here?

i have also decided on aerospace rather than environmental. so omit environmental.
