Environmental vs Civil

My high school student is interested in environmental engineering. Some schools have a stand alone program, whilee others offer an emphasis in under Civil.

Would it be better to major in the “broad” civil engineering?

Environmental engineering comes in two flavors:

  1. Constructed projects (i.e.; dams and other water management structures, waste treatment, etc.) and would normally fit right into a civil engineering program.
  2. Chemistry based, dealing with treatment and disposal of hazardous waste products (typically from industrial processes).

Which is your student interested in? The answer to that question will help you answer your question.

{my wife is an environmental engineer of the #2 kind)

I think he is most interested in Construction projects.
