I recently applied to stony brook thru eop and I’ve read up on the summer program that is required if you are accepted to attend. Does anyone know if you are able to go home during the weekends? Or if I would be able to commute just for the classes and go back home? I live at home with just my mom and I help her pay for the rent with my job. I want to be able to atleast work the weekends during this program because my mom would not be able to pay it and the rest of bills by herself. If anyone has any info on what i can do with regards to this I’d appreciate it, thank you.
Congratulations on gettibg into stony Brook!! One of the top public universities in the state!
Part of the eop summer program is to help you integrate into college life. It’s also an important transition period for both you and your mother (/parents). So, you will be able to go home on weekends and work, but you will stay in the dorms during the week, make friends and create a support network, get adjusted to college. All if this will come in handy in the fall, because it means you’ll have acquired the skills other freshmen will be learning on the go. Since you have other challenges (worry about home, for one) that they dont’have, it’ll make things a bit more equal.
Part of it is planning for the future, starting right now : when you’re in college, your mom won’t be able to rely on you - but you two have to find a way to make it work, because those four years will make the difference between your being able to take care of yourself and your family AND your mom when she’s older, … Or not. You have five months to figure out the transition and plan for your better future. You can do it. Ask for advice (Eop advisers at our college are used to this situation, for instance.) You made it into college, you have EOP (which has become quite selective), it means you’re strong and smart. On to the next step in your journey. Make your mother even prouder by graduating college
Thank you for clearing this up for me, means alot!
@jramon99 You already got accepted to Stony through EOP? What are you stats?
84 overall average, 1140 on the SATs
Were you accepted already?
We haven’t admitted any EOP applicants yet.
Chris
^Okay… aargh. I hate it when kids post false information.
Also, I need to clarify – there are NO BREAKS during the five-week EOP summer session, and it is MANDATORY. If you can’t make the summer session, then you won’t be able to be admitted to the program.
Chris
^but students are allowed to go home for the weekend, right? They must stay on campus during the week and participate in all activities (since without them their odds of success are severely impacted.) I don’t think anyone who’s done Summer Session has regretted it. It seems like a big deal to high school kids in February but when June comes around they’re really happy and in September they come to really appreciate what EOP has done for them.
Other universities have summer sessions too (Penn State, FSU…) but they make the students PAY for them. EOP are really lucky to have that session AND on top of it, it’s free!
Nope, weekend activities are included. I believe there’s usually one off day in the middle somewhere, but that’s it as far as free time.
The summer program is BANANAS, in a really good way. It’s awesome. But part of that is that you’re all in, all the time.
Chris
Yup, all summer session students are REALLY GLAD they did it.
But I didn’t realize they had weekend programming too!
This is awesome, all the students must be really tight by the end of the summer.
Of course, it means OP needs to figure it out NOW.
The OP would thus need to figure out a transition period for him/her and his/her mom. Either the parent and the student up their hours now, save the money for the summer, or both? I think EOP is also very good to help parents who’ve relied on kids grow independent too. It can be really tough for family units. But it’s an investment in the future.
