Hi, I got accepted to the EOP/AIM program at Stony Brook on march 1st and I'm really excited because Stony is my top choice, it's not too far from home and has a great reputation. But the more I think about it the more I get nervous. I don't want to be treated differently, or like I'm beneath the other kids. I know I'll have to do a summer session and I'll have access to tutoring, but what else will be different? Will I have special limitations or will I be put into 'slow' classes? Sorry I'm ranting but could anyone tell me what it's like exactly? I'm really nervous, thank you :)

No you won’t be treated differently. You take classes like everyone else. The only difference is that you are carefully monitored by a counselor and you are required to come for tutoring and counseling.

Hey there! I’m actually in Stony Brook’s EOP so I can answer a couple of your questions.

DON’T WORRY! You won’t be treated differently at all. In fact, no one outside of the EOP network will know that you’re part of the program. You do NOT get a special marking on your student id, you do NOT get an ‘EOP status’ on your Solar account. And no, neither your transcript nor future degree will give any indication that you were in the program. The only people who’ll know are other EOP students and counselors (which in my opinion, is the best part of being in the program).

Aside from the summer program where everyone takes similar level classes, you are only restricted by your own intellectual ability. I have friends in EOP, for example, whose math skills ranged from taking High School algebra to Calculus II come their first semester. You won’t be brought down to a lower standard; that would defeat the purpose of providing tutors, who are supposed to help you shine in courses that challenge you.

So in short, you should be happy that you’ve been accepted into this program. If you have any more questions, just message me through my inbox. Good luck and hope you choose SBU!

Oh and P.S., the summer academy is the academic equivalent to boot camp. They courses are very demanding, and require the cooperation of your peers to succeed.

I have the option to accept or decline the EOP program if I click accept does that mean i’m in ??

Yes it does.

Side note: our EOP cohort has one of the highest graduation rates of any program on campus. It’s a fantastic program.

Chris

I think if you click accept that means you are going there definitely, and thank you Yankeemonkey683 :)

Hey Chris, if we were told that our grades were too high for EOP, does that mean we will get in through regular admissions?

Sorry one more question but what will the EOP program pay for exactly, like it’s not a free ride is it?

Not necessarily, I applied EOP and was rejected but I received normal admission.
I applied EOP at Geneseo and was told my grades were too high but I was still rejected as a normal applicant.

Does this mean I have to go to stonybrook ?

Sent from my HTCEVOV4G using CC

The EOP gives you a grant of $1,000 as well as a $450 book stipend every semester. If you end up commuting (like some of my friends do), you’ll be getting a very nice refund check. If you dorm like me, however, you will have to take out some loans (assuming you didn’t get any outside scholarships).

For reference, here’s my financial aid for the 2012-2013 year. I have an EFC of $0

Award Description Category Offered
Federal Pell Grant Grant 5,550.00

EOP Book Stipend Grant 900.00

EOP Grant 1,000.00

TAP Fall Grant 2,500.00

Tuition Credit - Fall Grant 297.50

TAP Spring Grant 2,500.00

Tuition Credit-Spring Grant 297.50

Perkins Loan - Loan 2,500.00

Direct Subsidized Loan 3,500.00

Aid Year Total 19,045.00

I wasn’t offered Work Study unlike most of my EOP peers. Aside from the 6k in loans I’m taking out (which are 0% interest btw), I only have $110 come out of pocket each semester.

“Hey Chris, if we were told that our grades were too high for EOP, does that mean we will get in through regular admissions?”

No. It just means that you get bumped in to the regular applicant pool.

Chris

Chris… do you know when is the next decision date for the regular applicants? thanks!

@Amal610, @Cuse06, congratulations! do you mind sharing your gpa and sats scores with us along with your financial status? thanks!

@Greentea177 No I don’t mind. My gpa is about an 84, I took the sat twice and super scored it so it’s a 1700 and I’m a family a 5 that makes around 39,000.

My gpa is also an 85
