I'm looking at my ePay page and I'm having trouble understanding a couple of fees that I'm being charged...

1) $150 - Orientation Fee. Why am I being charged $150 when I already paid $110 out of my pocket to RSVP? Is orientation $260 or $110 or $150?

2) $41 - Housing Activity Fee. I'm not sure what this is for at all. I haven't even moved in yet...

Can anyone help me out?

Also, this is not related to ePay, but, did you all get spirit boxes at orientation? I paid an extra $20 and all I got was a shirt that I could have chosen myself at the student store for $2 less. I was expecting a spirit box -- am I missing something here?

I paid for the Orientation program. Why am I being charged another Orientation fee?
The orientation fee covers the costs of that program, including housing and food. The mandatory Orientation Fee, charged to every new student, is applied to Welcome Week programming at the start of the semester. For more information, contact the Office of Orientation.

Activity Fee
Each student in university housing is charged an activity fee of $41 (subject to change) per semester to support group outings and programming coordinated by the Office for Residential Education.

Pre-order your spirit box today to ensure it is waiting for you during Welcome Week. Pre-orders are accepted online unti Friday, August 7 – 5:00 pm PST. All orders may be picked up at the Spirit Booth located on Trousdale from Wednesday, August 19 – Friday, August 21 from 9:00 – 4:00 pm. Beginning Monday, August 24, orders can be picked up at Hazel & Stanley Hall 100.

The t-shirt you got is not related to the spirit box.
I know how you feel but unfortunately, that’s how they charge things.

Ahh, thanks very much! Yes I figured that those were just random fees, as I was also confused about the $55 programming fee and the $15 student service fee, but it turns out that they’re just mandatory fees that we all need to pay. Oh well. Thanks again!

Where did you see all the details regarding the payment? My epay page only has the full cost for the entire semester. Also I received scholarships that were supposed to be sent to USC but how do I know if USC has received them or not?

Last year they sent a letter saying they had received the outside scholarships and the scholarships appeared on the financial aid summary and as credits on the monthly statement.

D has one outside scholarship that has already appeared and been credited this year, and one that does not yet appear anywhere. If you think the scholarship will arrive after the payment due date you can request a deferment for that amount for a small fee.

Last year we faxed my D’s outside scholarship notification letters. Even though the organizations were responsible for sending scholarship cheques, this way USC had prior info that those moneys were forthcoming.
An organization can be a bit late in sending the money but as soon as it comes in, it is credited on epay.

Ah! Thank you.
And hmm I’m thinking that maybe I should fax my scholarship letters to the financial aid office because they aren’t showing up online.

When are the Cal Grant and the like (federal grants) applied to the statement?
Or is it already applied and they just don’t show it as “Cal Grant” etc.?

D’s Cal Grant has not yet been applied to her statement (though it appears on her financial aid summary). Last year they placed a credit for the Cal Grant on her account on July 22nd, though the California Student Aid Commission did not forward payment to USC until October.

When it showed up on the statement it said: “Cal Grant - A Fa2008”

Thanks alamemom! So does that mean we should not worry about that amount as it will be covered by CSAS? How will that work since payment is due August 21st?

@ josie17, I called earlier in the week and the FA office told me the billing statement would be out on the 24th. But I guess it’s out earlier for some people? I suggest you call if it’s not out by Friday.

xboredguy, the 7/24 due date is for the June statement, and only continuing students had June statements. There will be a statement date (probably the 24th) for July and your payment will be due just before classes start on about August 21st. Your minimum payment on July 24th is, as shown, $0.00. (And no, you are not being stupid!)

forever09, I am not sure how USC will handle Cal Grant credits this year with all the uncertainty surrounding them. My guess is that they will either credit them in advance as they have done in the past or defer that amount until CSAC sends the money.
