So, I'm doing EPGY online for advanced math (Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, etc.) I know that most colleges will not accept this for credit. However, if I took the same courses at a community college instead (possibly in summer) would I get credit for them at most (high-tier) colleges? Do you guys recommend doing the community college instead of EPGY? I know many people who have done EPGY but not many who do community college courses. Would it be better (look better) to do Community college?

Community College is the cheaper option. EPGY is fairly expensive.

You would not get credit at high tier colleges for community college classes, though you may at mid-tier universities.

community college

You would definitely learn more being in a physical class (even though it’s a community college, which actually might be a good thing with smaller class sizes and more individual attention, a much better alternative if your instructor/prof is a good lecturer and chances are he is b/c community college profs are hired based on their teaching skills and not necessarily for research like the universities) as opposed to some online lecture.

Plus you could just do MIT’s OCW instead of EPGY. Which would be free and probably better than EPGY.

While you may or may not get credit, if you truly learned the material, you could probably test out of those classes and take upper division math classes when you start college.

To summarize, I think community college > EGPY in terms of college admissions, costs and overall effectiveness and quality.
It seems that EGPY is almost a scam. I figure they reuse the same video lectures and materials and so it’s not really helpful.

EPGY is pretty expensive, yes. I think I would learn equally well in a physical or online class. I learn better on my own, believe it or not. Yes, I could study on my own like OCW or elsewhere, but the problem is that colleges wouldn’t know that and would assume I didn’t do any math (just 2 years of math is not a good thing). I mean, I could say in my essay that I did OCW, but they wouldn’t really have proof.

I understand why you say cost + quality are better in CCs (though, being busy, convenience advantage definitely goes to EPGY). However, could you elaborate on why CCs also give me a bigger advantage on college admissions?

Personally, I think you should excel in these harder math classes because you are interested in math, not because it will look good for colleges.

OCW and free online material would be a great option for you to learn if you think you learn better that way. However, as you mentioned, there’s no physical proof you actually learned the material and it might not be as “impressive” as getting an A in the equivalent community college class or EPGY.

But then I must once again question your motive…

But that being said, I still think community college would be more impressive. With online classes, it is so easy to cheat (online exams!).

If I were a college admissions officer, I would see more dedication with community college because the applicant actually has to put aside time to physically go to class and also do homework and study/do well on real exams.
