Ok so I recently took a PSAT that I obtained from a certain website and downloaded the answer key that went along with it. However one of the CR questions reads as the following

(For lengths sake, I will only put the sentence that matters from the passage)

"In A Moveable Feast he wrote, "I cannot remember Gertrude Stein ever speaking well of any writer who had not written favorably about her work or done something to advance her career except for Ronald Firbank and, later, Scott Fitzgerald"

30) In line 23, "advance" most nearly means

A)Furnish
B)Ascend
C)Further
D)Propose
E)Exceed

I obviously chose C, further because it is a common english idiom to say Further one's career but the answer key says B, ascend. What do you guys think?
