I have a list of topics for essays andam trying to narrow down the topics. A lot of people on here seem to be saying NOT to write about ECs. What if it was an experience that I had DURING an EC, but that didn't really relate to the activity itself (i.e. a personal/social experience rather than an experience directly related to the activity). There are some events that occurred during a summer program I attended that really helped me gain personal insight and didn't really have to do with the academic aspect of the program. Anyway, I guess I have lots of time, so I can go ahead and write several essays and narrow it down, but I was just wonderingwhat tips people have.

What's wrong with writing about EC's?

EC's are overdone and at times excessive when you have a two page resume attached, but w/e. Yeah, well I wrote about my exploration into meditation and the results of it, and I think it worked well, so I would say be unique yet personal and show rather than tell if you're given the opportunity because admissions committees like to feel that they are there watching what you're describing to them, so good luck witht that essay.

Oops, sorry for my trivial query but does anyone remember the character limit for the essays when making use of the Common app ? Perhaps my computer has malfunctioned, and thus I can't gain access to this site and click on any given link. Btw, is anybody up the same creek ? I notice the "error on page" on the commapp site :(

Thanks a bunch !

From what I hear it's 2000, though I don't even believe that because then the average word will be three letters in a 500 word essay, so... but I'll bump this so we can get an accurate answer from someone who did it online because I was a paper person myself.

It says "You will not be able to type more than 6,000 characters."
