Essay Dilemma

I have two ideas for my common app essay, but I’m not sure which one to use. As of now, I’m definitely going with Dartmouth early decision.

Essay 1: Write about my involvement with youth court or mock trial (most likely the former) and how it’s shaped my passion for law. I would write an anecdotal/analysis essay, and then talk about becoming a public defender after law school.

Essay 2: Write an essay on an astute observation about life. This one wouldn’t really involve my passion for law like the one above, but it would still reveal an aspect of my character and how that affects my outlook on life/education. The essay about law would probably be a bit more serious than this one. Although, essay 2 would be more witty but also have an underlying serious tone that shows through as the essay progresses.

I know my descriptions are a little vague, but I haven’t written the essays yet and don’t want share my idea for the second one on a public thread.
Thanks in advance!

I like the second one because as you said, it leaves the oppurtunity to be witty.

Witty is good.

That's what I thought; a college admissions rep reads hundreds of serious essays and I'm sure it'd be nice to have a witty one thrown in there. As I'm writing it I could try to connect it to my passions if the oppurtuinty rises.

I like the sound of the second one as well. Reading this site, I got a little worried because EVERYONE seems to be writing essays that are about school or EC's. But I just want to write about something random that will show my personality. At least adcoms won't be bored, I hope. And yes, witty is good.

Also, you'll probably enjoy writing it. I'm not planning on submitting (or writing, for that matter) any essay that wouldn't make someone smile and/or chuckle. If I don't enjoy writing it, who'll would want to read it?

2nd one. 1st one sounds undully boring
