For essays, what is the proper format? Are you supposed to have your name and such at the top?

I'm not sure if I need to put my name and "_____ Supplement Essay" in the top right corner, or if that would look unprofessional since it looks like I'm doing a high school assignment, or what.

I haven’t emailed anyone about it, so my answer isn’t straight from a source or anything, but I would say just put your essay and nothing else into a word document. I mean they know it’s YOUR essay, and they know it pertains to THEIR school (or else why would they be reading it), so it doesn’t really seem necessary to add all that other information.

I was just a little worried about multiple supplement essays getting mixed up or the supplement getting mixed up with the main common app essay, or not looking “professional” enough.

Though I suppose they would be able to sort through papers easily. For some reason I always feel like these are being read by a computer and not by real people.

Octagons - When you upload your essays into the Common App Online the system will automatically add a footer that includes all the information that colleges need to identify you. Just format it so that it is easily readable.

And the Common App Online will absolutely not mix up your essays. Trust the system and the process. Oh, and your essays will be read by real people, too.

Take a deep breath and relax. This process and system have worked for many applicants and their forms.

I just have one more question. Should all of the essays be double-spaced? I’m used to double-spacing typed essays, but that seems a little unprofessional, especially for the supplement essays that are only a paragraph or two.

I left it single-spaced, and I believe that is how colleges would like you to have it unless they state otherwise (for example, one of Rice’s supplemental essay specifically asks for double-spaced pages).

That’s what I think I’ll do unless somebody confirms that it’s better to be double spaced. To me, double-spaced essays look “bloated” or look like rough drafts.
