The common app specifies that the essay should be from 250-500 words, but mine is about 750 right now. However, a college counselor told me that I shouldn’t worry about it, and as long as the essay fits on one page at a reasonable font size, it’s OK.

Does anyone know about this? Should I leave it as is or try to cut it down?

I have the same problem - mine's 650 words, though. I don't think it would be possible to fit 750 words on one page with 12pt font and 1in margins, but maybe a smaller font would still be reasonable.

My essay for EA was about 700 words and it all fit on one page, 12 pt. font, smaller margins, the whole deal. I would think that as long as you can fit it all on one page, the adcoms will not mind reading a few extra sentences.

I don't think the spacing REALLY matters, just as long as it looks good. No spaces between paragraphs - it tends to divide the essay too much, as far as looks are concerned.

you guys...put this in perspective
20,000 applications...do you really think harvard--HARVARD--is going to accept/reject you based on whether you put spaces between your paragraphs? do you really think they'll even remember?
this is my gift to you guys: chill out! i'm just as anxious about the whole thing as you guys are, but there's really no point worrying about it...do the best you can on the application, send it in, and go get some ice cream (or hot chocolate if it's cold where you live)...this is SENIOR YEAR! ENJOY IT! :)
