Essay length

On the online app it says for the main essay, its length should be equivalent to 1-2 typed pages, while the two other questions should be a 1-2 paragraphs.

Now assuming that they mean 1-2 typewritten pages single-spaced, isn't this a bit long for a application essay? I mean for other colleges, their main personal essays are like max of 500-600 words, which I know for sure is like half the length of 1-2 typewritten pages... I wouldn't mind writing a longer essay, I just don't want to be writing too much if UofC does not want that.

Also, for the other two questions, the 1-2 paragraphs thing is pretty broad too...

So for the people that have started writing their essays for UofC, how many words were yours? Do you guys think that length is really an issue?

Length is not an issue. Write a good essay.

826 words, accepted EA. I used arial 12, which makes the essay a little longer than one page.

UChicago is definitely interested in the quality, not the length. Unlike some nasty English teachers out there, they don't count how many words you wrote.

I don't think there is anything wrong with going over 1,000 words. For that matter, 1,500 words.

But they do have limited time, so a twenty page overview of your life would seem excessive.

I'm not sure if the old thread of UC essays is still on the site, but you can always look at that for ideas and to see how long it should be. The idea is to write creatively and be original. Their essays inspire thought and you should enjoy writing them.
