UChicago essay length

for the first two questions, does anyone know what length the responses should be? there is literally no constraint on the uncommon application.

and for the option essay, the uncommon application provides:

"Please respond with an essay equivalent to one or two typewritten pages."

...one or two pages single-spaced?

i'm not surprised the application is vague, it is probably intentional on the part of uchicago as they strive to be so different from any other application process, but does anyone have any experience with this or any idea as to what is expected?

I know its really vague -- when I submitted my application my longer essay was the equivalent of about two pages, single space (longer than it needed to be perhaps). I think you can make it however long you need it to be.

For the first two quesitons, mine were about 500 words, but again, you can make it however long you want.

If your worried about your essay being too long then print preview your application so you can be sure everything was uploaded okay.

which option did you choose? i'm doing the 4th option but my story has a lot of dialogue...making my essay way longer on paper than it should be...

My "Why Chicago?" essay is ~700-800 words
My Favorites essay is ~500-600 words
I chose my own prompt for the main essay; it's ~600 words

I feel like I ramble at times, though.

I did the second second option -- "Tell us about your table."

I'm impressed your trying the fourth one --it seemed a little too complicated, but then again, so is the whole process!

There isn't a page limit, I believe, because there are people who are going to write fantastic essays that are longer than the 500-word gold standard, much longer.

Just because you can, though, doesn't mean you should. Word economy is still vital, as I imagine an admissions officer would find a longer essay that could have been much shorter very tedious to read through.

i liked the 4th option because it was the most unconventional prompt i've ever seen. i bet they had a really great time coming up with those 11 obscure elements!
