This type of question has probably been asked a billion times, and I apologize :/ My question is this. I finished writing one of the two essays for UNC-Chapel Hill and it says it has a limit of approximately 500 words. Would it be bad if my essay was 40 words over? I'm not how strict some colleges are on this... Thanks!

@noratoledo: Wow. 9 posts from 10:47 to 11:15 in multiple forums, all saying the same thing. I guess the graduate program isn’t working out too well if you have to be a shill for essay services (unless, of course, they are your services). If that’s the case, I suggest that you fire your marketing director.

Mine is about 40 words over as well. I wouldn’t worry about it–I think many students reuse their Common App essays using the free choice topic, and those essays are rarely 500 words exactly.

Many of the successful applicants who have posted their essay lengths here very often exceed sometimes by a few hundred words this limit. You shouldn’t worry at all

Does the common app have the 500 word limit too?
