im such an idiot. in my common app essay, i mentioned "columbia" because i used the same essay for both schools (i only used common app for 1 school)

how dead am i?

Honestly, I don't think you'll get in. It shows that you didn't even have the concern to proof read and change the college's name.

lol, when I went to a presentation at UMich, the Adcom mentioned that you can change up essays and submit them, but to make sure it doesn't end up with something like "and that's why I would like to attend the University of Notre Dame"
He said if the essay is really good outright, they might overlook the little slip, but it'll get passed around the office and get laughed at, lol

um i don't know i did them same thing in my supplement essay but it had the name of a non competive school so they probably overlooked it, they mention that mistake is common so don't worry about it

Yeah, but Cornell adcom is going to be like, "Oh, we're his backup for Columbia...pshh, we think not," and throw in the reject pile. I'd be pretty offended if a kid didn't have the consideration to change the name.

well, unless there's something you can do to change it, you may as well forget about it for now and just hope for the best.

Yeah...honestly. Why didn't you proofread? =/ Or show to friends/teachers? It's not as little as it seems...

Ya it definitely shows that it isn't your top-choice school or that you are just an idiot. Best of luck at your top choice school then because I would give you the big stamp of rejection, but who knows.

hey why not be positive.. columbia might pass as cornell when theyre skimming over it really fast as i think they would do.

you could tell them that you majorly screwed up the main app and tell them then you will resend it by snail mail a hard copy of your corrected essay + app

of course, dont tell them how you screwed up..

I typed my essay on the Word and pasted it into the textbox in the Common App. I separated the whole thing into paragraphs, but after pasting it, it all jumbled into one huge paragraph (I forgot to change this before sending it). Do you think that will hurt my essay portion of the app a lot? I thought it was a pretty nice essay.

In all honesty, do something about it--resend. Say you noticed an error. Taking action is much better than not.

I think you should resend it.

I mean, they may very well ignore it.

But, it really suggests a lack of interest in actually matriculating at the college should you be accepted, and in that aspect could very well hurt your chances at admission. It really depends on who's reading the app.

It was an honest mistake, so if you're a really strong applicant it may not matter.

I don't think you can resend the application because you can't send the application without submitting an application fee. Even if you were to reapply with a corrected essay & more $, how would you get back the original application with the mistake?

E-MAIL!!! I know that for Harvard, one could send updates and changes/corrections regarding the common app and supplement. Find out from the Cornell website is they'll accept updates/corrections via their Admissions E-mail account. I'm applying to Cornell, so now I'm going to check those essays extra carefully (LOL especially since I'm also applying to Columbia)!! Oh, and for Princeton, on the common app additional info section, I accidentally sent them the info I sent to Harvard (for Early Action). The only mistake was that I told Harvard that I had not yet received my October 2005 SAT score (b/c at the time it was true). This same message went to Princeton though. But honestly, I'm not worried in the least that it will hurt my chances. It's such a trivial, little, insignificant mistake..... right? LOL, good luck to everyone!!! :)

"hey why not be positive.. columbia might pass as cornell when theyre skimming over it really fast as i think they would do. "

maahhahah i dont think so jackhammersuit

It seems trivial, but it's really not. It sends a bad message to the college. The top colleges in the US don't need you (not you, the general you), they could find 100 other people with the same qualifications but more interest in the school.

It isn't trivial that I sent a Regular Action school a message by mistake telling them that I didn't receive my October SAT Scores?? I don't see how that will hurt my chances at all, considering the fact that they will have my SAT scores! They may even surmise that while they have a copy, that I never got a score report or something. Either way, I believe it is VERY trivial indeed! Does anyone else think so?

No, mixing up names isn't trivial. I misunderstood you. No need for to be pretentious, use exclaimation points and type words in capslock ;). I thought you meant you sent them the info without changing the college name.

Oh ok... gotcha yeah I agree. I made sure to seriously check my essays before I sent them. I know that it's the sort of thing that gets overlooked when all else is overwhelmingly positive, but it's also disrespectful even to an infinitesimal degree. So, be careful everyone!

Oh and sorry, I didn't mean to sound pretentious at all. Please forgive me :) The thing is, I thought that entire post was directed at me (as paranoid as that sounds), but it did come right after it, and you did misunderstand mine. So I thought you were the one being pretentious ("none of the top schools need you").... that hurt... but now I know it was just a misunderstanding.

Good thing I only applied to one college.
