Essay Question - Answering the Prompt

I've been studying my head off the past week, and I've come across more than one prompt where there is no clear answer, for example, the "Does the end justify the means?" prompt. My problem is, there is no universal yes or no for this. There are many valid examples to the affirmative, but there are also many examples to the negative. So what should I do when I come across prompts with gray areas such as this? If it asked "Does the end always justify the means?", then I could have a concrete yes or no, but in this case it is hard to answer. So help?

Note: I'm not here for ridicule, I'm here to learn. Yes, it may be a stupid question, but it is a sincere one. We're all trying to go to college, and this test is a big "Make it or break it." thing for me.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give! It is definitely appreciated!

Pick one side and make a strong argument with a good example or three. You don’t have to be “right” you just have to present your argument well and write it well. Filling up both sides of the paper and using some good vocab (as long as its used properly) will help too.
