I'm applying to Rice ID, and it's my top choice school. However, I absolutely despise the essay topic. Do you think it'll be okay if I put a little spin on the essay and not take it so seriously?
What I could offer Rice-
1. My looks. (I'm not particularly hot, but the essay would be hilarious to read.)
2. My height. I'm tall for an Asian girl.
3. I'm kind of an oddball. I could talk about some of the stranger things I've done.

Or should I just stick to the traditional essay?

After they read the 1000th essay, I would imagine a little humor and creativity would be welcome. You certainly would stand out... Do make sure the English is excellent and you might see how it hits others when they read it. An English teacher or college counselor would know if it was too far out. However, if you feel it really reflects you then don't let others make you do a very serious essay that is a carbon of everyone elses. It can be very good to stand out as an individual, especially at Rice, which is very wholistic in it's acceptance policy. You can always try writing it and if it doesn't "feel right" write a different essay. By the way, practice and more practice and trying something different is how you become a really good writer. Good luck.

Thanks... I just finished my UChi essay, which is completey crazy and out there, so it's going to take a while for my creativity and rhetorical choices to calm down.

I also wasn't sure if Rice liked wackos as much as UChi does. I guess I just need a confidence booster? Thanks for your suggestions.

believe me, Rice takes more wackiness than UofC
When u see the common app suypplement and the little white box.. everyone put summat crazy and amazing... with that box, DONT limit yourself

Make sure what you write sticks to the topic, but have some fun with it. As long as your diversity doesn't come off as some sort of superficial diversity, you should be fine. My essay was about some silly things I did for a friend, so it wasn't a boring college essay, but I was able to tie it to the prompt.

Sorry, y'all are being so enthusiastic about krazy essays that I have to recommend caution. The three topics that you suggested don't clearly lead to any characterization of your insight, logic, or particular place in the world. All teens are awkward (especially some of the types that apply to Rice), so an essay like this might not show the beauty of your thought. In reality, your application will be comparable to most of the other applicants' essays. You have to show not only that you're qualified or that you're unique but also that you can think. Unless you can describe yourself as awkward with such skill that this essay doesn't become trite, I doubt that it will succeed.

Remember, downers are meant to be proven wrong, so take this with a grain of salt. Good luck.
