Essay topic cliche?

For my common app essay, I know it isn’t advised to write about a sport accomplishment/failure. However, for my essay I planned on writing about how I failed at every sport until I found the one for me, competition cheerleading. So even though it is a sport failure, it isn’t the typical “I lost the game but won.” So, opinions on writing about topic? Too cliche or not…?

I think it honestly depends on what you write.

It’s not the topics that are clichés, it’s the essays themselves.

^ Agreed. As long as you make the essay truly personal, allow your own true feelings and thoughts to shine through, you can’t really go wrong. Make it sincere, and avoid slipping into cliche sayings or phrases you’ve read numerous times elsewhere. Other than that, go for it, and good luck.

With over a million American students, alone, applying in each admissions cycle, it’s hard to come up wih an entirely original topic.

Therefore, focus on writing an engaging essay, rather than a totally original-topic essay.
