Writing a sports essay

Is writing an essay about a failure in a sport to cliche? I have an idea for an essay which I lost a match in which I was the heavy favorite to win and I learned a few lessons from my failure. Is this a good idea for an essay?

It really depends on how you write it, but the topic itself is a cliche. That doesn’t mean you can’t write about it; it just means you have to get a little more creative to make it stand out.

That certainly falls into the overdone category but I would still attempt it and see if you can really make it personal and meaningful.

I’m going to be a bit bolder here, I say steer clear!

@2016senior I wrote my common app essay on how I was mediocre in track but how it shaped my high school career, mentality, and my friendships. Looking back on it, it was a pretty unoriginal and overused essay. However, looking back on high school, track and field was something very meaningful to me. I still got into a pretty decent school. If it was something memorable and meaningful in your life, go for it. I wouldn’t try and ‘fake’ a super unique or outstanding essay, because admissions would clearly see through it.

If you have any questions (as your essay is quite similar to mine) send me a message

I’m with @OnMyWay2013. It all depends on how you write it. If you do chose this topic be sure to include lots of very specific details. What was the weather like? How would you describe your opponent? Also be sure to put us right in the moment by starting out with a narrative ie. you in the match. Good luck!!
