For one of my essays, I have to talk about a community: describe it, then explain my role within it (several of you may know what school! ;) ). They list several possibilities, including religious, cuisine, income, intellectual heritage, ethnicity, race, interest, ideology, shared geography, etc.

I have literally NO IDEA what to talk about. I had an idea, but the topic conflicted with the topic of another essay going to the same school. Does anyone have any ideas on how to start, or any ideas on how to get the "brain juices flowing"? lolol, corny, I know...... But I have been thinking over this for awhile, and I'm still not sure where to start.

My son is working on the same essay. “Intelectual Heritage” sounds like a $10 word that doesn’t mean anything. I guess you could interpret it to mean, “Do you share any intellectual interests with any family members?” For example, are you and a parent interested in the same field such as law, medicine, or education? Do you come from a family of big readers? Does your family share a passion for a sport or activity such as cycling, cooking, camping, boating, or bowling?

For what it’s worth, my son’s first draft is about his participation in Science Olympiad and how it is much more team oriented than he thought it would be. Perhaps you have a club, sport, or other similar interest you could expand on.

You could write about how you feel about your home town or neighborhood, pride of ethnicity, or perhaps you’re part of a group of enthusiasts that all enjoy the same hobby.

Start with some lists–every group you are part of, beginning with your family and on to more obscure groups–what are you a fan of? Are you part of any online communities? Are you perhaps a regular at some hipster pizza joint? The more creatively you approach the concept of community and belonging, the more likely you are to come up with an interesting essay.
