Essay Topic

My life in sophmore year to put it bluntly was hell. Since it was so bad, it ended up causing me to get a B in Calc. I was thinking about writing an essay talking about the events in that year, but put a spin on it about being lucky.

Sophmore year events:
Loved one died
60 + days of school missed due to illness, in hospital for 15 days, ER four times
Two people in my family diagnosed with brain tumors
Mother almost died due to massive blod clots in lungs
Grandmother had emergencey surgery
Plus a lot more...

I was just wondering if it was too sappy or if a better topic should be picked. My grades that year weren't bad except for the B in Calc AP, other than that all A's.

It would be hard to be credible while saying those events were lucky.

It might be hard to be personal, specific, honest and revealing about about yourself, which is the point of the essay, if you have a lot of background events to explain first.

I suggest that you take a look at this advice from UVa:

No, I am not saying those events were lucky. I just wanted to say that it wasn't a normal life story essay.
