I have a deep interest in computer science, and although this comes across in my activities (app developer, Compsci tutor, self taught myself multitude of computer languages, started my own club based on the topic), I'd really like to do something unique involving my love for programming. Problem is, when I apply to Stanford and MIT, a bunch of people will talk about their interest in computer science. How can I make mine unique?
Thanks in advance!

Do you have an area of CompSci that piques your interest more than just “programming?” For example, you say you know several languages. Have you ever looked at languages from a meta-level (e.g., LALR(1) languages)? Are these specific programming techniques you have been turned on by (non-procedural, object-oriented, expert-systems)? Instead of web-programming using using CSS, HTML, Javascript, PHP, etc., have you ever programmed a content management system to generate web pages?
Have you ever delved into the ethical issues of CompSci, like privacy? I think a topic like realizing how a love of programming could so easily blind one to the ethical issues like hacking and spying would make you stand out. And on and on… in other words, what are your specific interests? When you apply to a place like Stanford, MIT, or CMU, they will be looking for those who can tilt toward the “meta-levels” of Computer SCIENCE. It sounds like you’ve got above and beyond, esp with tutoring and starting the club. Now show them that you can also THINK and have interests above and beyond “programming.”

Thank you so much for your input, it’s a huge help! That’s a great idea, I’ll be sure to heavily consider it!

Even if you have not yet delved into more esoteric areas, are there any you might eventually - maybe - have an interested in? robotics programming, artificial intelligence, massively-parallel computing, etc… Then you can also express an interest in LEARNING, mentioning some of the things you haven’t yet had an opportunity to learn, but that you look forward to in college.

I have all read your quries.

thanks.

Digmedia- thanks for your response.
As a matter of fact, I’m part if the robotics club in my school and have secured the president spot for my junior and senior years (currently a frosh). I enjoy it very much and we got 5th place in the county this year as well as winning the most aesthetically appealing, which is kind of a bogus prize. I was the designer though, so does that count for anything?
