essay topics

the thing with college essays is that you are trying to impress and captivate some other random person who has never met you so actually I feel that getting opinions from random people online who have never met you is a good way to get started. There are many topics that aren't very good for college essays and this depends on the person.

Also, the only people whose opinion I would be weary about is that of your "competition"....yes, people might go as far as try to sabotage your essay or app because they thing it makes it easier for them to get in....however columbia students and grads will most likely just give an honest opinion...it is up to the applicant to decide what's best or how they want to present themselves but if a couple of columbia students tell you its a bad idea you should at least rethink it.

i wrote my admissions essay on a sport (pole vault) and how it relates to life, but i focused more on how my attitude towards it is similar to my attitude towards life. ( i really suck at pole vaulting, but think that it is fun, and so worth the trouble) anyway, it worked out for me. i agree with the first few pieces of advice- be yourself, and don't try too hard. if you try to be super smart, you will look really dumb, because there is always a smarter applicant out there, and the admission staff has heard it all before. good luck!
