Essay Weight

I am extremely worried about my essays at this point. I am working on making them better, but I have already submitted 2 to Brown for ED.

How much weight do the essays carry? I mean, obviously they are a big part of your application, but I feel as though I have pretty good everything else.

Are they really the deal breaker?

They are the deal breaker.
A bad essay will almost always lead to a rejection, unless you have godly EC's like finding a cure for cancer.

Okay, here's another follow up question...

how about alright essays? i dont think mine are terribly terrible, just not great.

The only for me to determine is to read them.
"Alright" essays just tell the adcoms that you are "alright."
Most schools, especially Brown, have tons of well qualified people applying.
This gives them the oppertunity to pick the most distinguished in the pool.

So in short, an "alright" essay is also bad.

A [generic essay] is not wrong, but it is not going to be a positive factor in the admission decision. It will not allow a student to stand out.

Essays matter more if you are a borderline case. If you are already a long shot then it won't tip the scales back to you, and if you are already so strong in every other area, so long as you don't bomb the essay you should be ok.

hm...i am just concerned, although i guess there is nothing i can do now! i think i am pretty good in all of my other areas, so ill just have to wait until the 11th of december!
