Assignment: Does the success of a community--whether it is a class, a team, a family, a nation, or any other group--depend upon people's willingness to limit their personal interests? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Many people would say that a succesful community is a place where everyone is equal and are willing to help each other. This utopic idea is most likely not possible because to accomplish it many individual liberties would be lost. It is in the nature odf humans and all animals to take care of themselves first. This is because all organisms want to pass on their traits in their offspring and they want their offspring to do the same, so they invest alot of their time and energy into caring for their young. Humans, unlike most animals, are to not only care for their children but also for others in the community because of technological advances that allow for food, water, and shelter to be easily obtained. A community can be succesful even if the individuals do not give up all of their individual civil rights but it will not be the same utopia that people dream about; this fact is seen two times in recent history. It was shwon once in communist Russia and fascist Germany and it was shown again in the late 1800's in the U.S.

Firstly, during the 1940's much of Europe was invovled in WWII. The was was started by Germany under the fascist ruler Hitler. He took away all the rights of the citizens and put the needs of the country before the needs of the individual. This plan failed primarily becasue Hitler was corrupt and used his power as the leader of Germany to try to conquer Europe and eliminate all Jews. The people of a country normally would not support a government were their needs are less important than the countries but in this case they did because they were in a severe depression and were desperate to escape it. After WWII Russia became a communist supper known as the USSR. Under the communist governemtn the rights of individuals were oppressed. During the second half of the 20th century the USA and USSR were competing with each other in military size and economic strength. In the end the USSR failed because the citizens had had enough of a govt that oppressed their rights. The USA continued as the worlds only supper power because they were supported by citizens with individual rights.

Another example of a time period where people did not all care about each other was the late 1800's. In this time some people were extremely rich and others were very poor. The rich justified their wealth with a theory called social darwinism which says the rich will succed and the poor will get poorer due to natural selection. Tis period was inturrupted by WWI in the 1910's but it collapsed during the great depression which shows how this community was unsuccesful due to too little cooperation.

In conclusion, for a community to be succesful there is a delciate belance between the loss of too many rights and with caring enough for others. Sommunism exemplifies the loss on many rights while the late 1800's and early 1900's exemplifies too little cooperation and it also failed.

There were quite a few mistakes in there. My favortie was about the ussr being a communist supper. I think I mispelled super 2 times.
I got an 11.

good job!!

I got an 8 too. I didn't think my essay was bad, it was Shakespeare either but damn I'm a writer. I was bummed about that , maybe my examples weren't sturdy enough....oh well, who knows,I didn't register online I'll never see it again. I hope my APELC comes back better, so far test scores have been a dissapointment.

question: Is deceptive ever justified?

essay:
There are many situations when deception is justified. These situations include when a person is trying to protect his or her friend's emotions from being injured or when a person lies to benefit the community at large. Most of all, deception is justified when the intention is to benefit other people. Instances where deception is allowed is proven true in the Civil War, one of my personal experiences, and in the novel to kill A Mockingbird.

During the Civil War Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to sustain the Union's moral. However, he did not announce to American that this was his initial intent, because he wanted this document to be viewed as a paternal and benevolent attempt to free theh slaves. When the slaves heard about this Proclamation, many of them joined the Union's side and as a result aided the Union's victory. By hiding the true meaning of the Emancipation Proclamation from the slaves, Lincoln led the North to victory by giving the North an honorable sense of morality and righteousness. This example prooves that when a person is trying to benefit a community, deception is justified and often is a very effective tactic to achieve a goal. Lincoln's goal wa sto preserve the Union and save the United States from splitting into two nations. Thus, he employed deception as a method to benefit the nation.

One of my personal experiences also reveal teh validity that deception can sometimes be justified. Once my AP history class was assigned an arduous project, and my friend did not have enough time to finish it. However, on the day that we presented our projects I feigned an enthusiastic smile and told her that her project was the best work I had ever seen. She genuinely believed me and ended up giving the most confident and smooth speech ever. Even my history teacher was awed by her confidence. By lying to my friend, I actually helped her receive a higher grade; this is another example that deception to benefit others is acceptable.

Harper Lee also demonstrates thath deception is sometimes justified. In the book to kill a Mockingbird, one fo the town members pretends to be an alcoholic by acting drug whenever he comes to town to shop for groceries. he always has a brown paper bag with a straw on which he occastionally sips in front of people. The rest of the townmembers all believe that he has an alcohol problem becuase they think there is a beer inside the paper bag. However, the paper bag actually contains a coke; the reason for this deception is that this man's wife and two children are black, and interracial love was considered heinous and unthinkable in Alabama in the 1960's. Thsu, this man chose to deceive the town into thinking thath he married a black woman because he is a mentally foolish drunkard in order to protect his wife and children. In the case with the Civil War, my friend's project, and this man in To Kill a Mockingbird, deception prooved to benefit othe people.

stuck on 1700, you took the SATs way too many times. You can't expect to improve that much. 6 times is the most i've ever heard. Just chill and stop taking this test.

I would like t chill out but, unfortunately, I need at least another 50 pts to get into the University I want.
I'm taking it another 4 times next year any way. and SAT II twice.
big deal..???!!!

stuck-on-1700 if you want that school so bad, you'll definitely put effory on that app. which will make your dream come true, so if you do retake the SATs, don't stress it and I AM SURE your college will see the persistant you and be amazed like me...good luck with that dream school!..as a junior I am starting to imagine worst case scenarios and I haven't even started writing apps yet..

happy janeshang,
i don't think that the college will be amazed by the # of times I take the test; everyone i know will take the test as many times as I.

Your chances of getting in are getting hurt more and more each time you take the SAT stuck-on-1700. Even if you do raise your score another 50 points, it won't matter- the damage has already been done.

I've heard that after taking it about 3 times, colleges start to look at you kind of funny..
