Essays - how important are they?

Will a strong essay help push people into acceptance? My school doesn't have a lot of resources since it's homeschool based, so I won't get in with President of X number of cronie clubs.

For an academically above-ish average student, how much weight does an essay hold? Will an AO green light based on a powerful essay, while ignoring the somewhat mediocre test scores?!!

/Brown, UCSD, UCLA, UCB, NYU, USC, Pepperdine, Chapman

According to CollegeBoard on a rating of Very Important, Important, Considered:

Brown-Important
UCSD-Very Important
UCLA-Very Important
UCB-Very Important
NYU-Very Important
USC-Very Important
Pepperdine-Very Important
Chapman-Very Important

So say my essay was a 11 on a scale of 1-10, how will that go?

I know plenty of high-scoring kids will have good essays....: (

Do this schools approve of essays like, dealing with familial problems (and how you "overcame them)?

Interesting that UCs say essays are less important than Brown does. I was under the impression that UCs mostly favored stats...
