Essays: Past or present?

For my essay, I talk about several memories of mine and how they have shaped me. However, I thought that if I kept it in the past tense it would be too detached from the reader. Thus I wrote it in present tense to hopefully bring the reader into the scene. But someone said that it could get confusing since it does deal with memories.

Thus I face either an essay completely in present tense or mostly past and a sentence or two in the present. So what would be preferable?

I had a flashback-type essay and I wrote it all in present tense.

Could I possibly get more input? Thanks c:

Mine was also a memory/flashback and I wrote it in present tense. I think it’s much more engaging that way!

Same here. I wrote it in present tense.
