Present or Past Tense? So confused!

I’ve finished my college essay, and, although it’s fairly cheesy, I think it speaks to my personality and is an important story for me to tell. However, when reviewing my essay, my counselors asked me to put the story in present tense, which I was confused about. My reasoning for using past tense is that the story occurred this summer, so naturally it fits in the past. They said that using present tense draws the reader into the moment. If it helps, the format of my essay is story (past tense right now but I can change it if you recommend) and then one final paragraph about what the story meant to me and its significance within my daily life (present tense). Should I change the story to present tense? I see what they mean, but I’m worried it’ll sound weird

It is common to write a story in the present tense for more dramatic effect, but don’t do this if the result makes you uncomfortable. It’s your essay.

D wrote most of her essay in the past tense, and had plenty of acceptances from great schools to pick from.

You are writing to tell your story, and share your personality. Don’t sweat this.
